The fact that a site like this exists is wonderful. For anyone with a computerized telescope needing power, and on dewy nights there are power outlets at each pad, which is a bonus when you get dew and need to run a hair dryer to warm up the optics. My random visit on a friday night had almost all the pads full of telescopes (I was expecting an empty park) with, as always, friendly amateur astronomers willing to let you look at the night sky through their equipment. Seriously what could be better than a tailor made astronomy park!!! The only negatives are that the park is in fairly close proximity to St. Louis and as such you do get some glow in the sky. Finally I encourage everyone to turn off lights when pulling into the lot and carefully maneuver with parking lights only. While it would make sense that the pads should be further from the lot, large telescopes are very very heavy and the shorter the walk the better. I can't wait to visit again.
Come on a Friday night and you'll find the astronomy club ready to show off some celestial bodies. They'll be there all night.
A nice dark spot near the city. The views to the south and the west are dark. You still get some city glow to the east. The concrete pads are great to setup you gear on.
Friday nights local astronomers set up telescopes and invite you to take a look.
Had a wonderful winter walk here and want to return in the summer. We saw prolific wildlife in a short amount of time and even a resident pair of Red Shouldered Hawks. The facilities are new and high quality.
